The Spain City capital, excluding the modern suburbs, is roughly the shape of an elongated quadrilateral in the north-south direction.
The modern development of the city begins in the 18th century, under the Bourboni, which undertook the capital’s construction and the construction of the Royal Palace.

Today, the city stretches westwards beyond the Manzanares River (crossed by 11 bridges, the major being Puente de Toledo and Puente de Segovia), along the Paseo de Extremadura and Calle de Toledo roads, and the new Ciudad Lineal neighborhoods, mostly made of villas and lots of green spaces.

The Spanish metropolis is distinguished by a large number of parks, large boulevards, monuments and fountains. The largest park in the capital, located on the right bank of the Manzanares River, is the Campo House, in fact a park-forest, covering almost 1750 ha, with three lakes.

Other parks: Retiro, Campo del Moro and Parc del Oeste. (V.Cucu, 1971) The extraordinary Temple of Debod is an ancient Egyptian edifice purchased by Spain during the construction of the great dam of Assuan. It was rebuilt next to Rosales, offering a panorama of the city.

Las Ventas, the 23,000-seat bullring arena, is the largest arena in Spain, where novice novels present their talents at an initiation ceremony where matadors battle their first bull.

A bus system practically surrounds Madrid. Road systems built in the 1960 are now being rebuilt because pollution caused by cars (especially in summer) has become a serious problem. Many passes built during that period have already been decommissioned.
