The island of Lombok is situated in the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Bali and Sumbawa. Lombok offers a quieter, slower-paced alternative to its neighbors.
Mataram is the capital of Lombok. It is home to Lombok’s largest Hindu Temple, Pura Meru. Also in the city is the Mayura Water Palace, which features a royal court and floating pavilion.
Another of Lombok’s picturesque religious centers is Batu Bolong Temple. It is perched above Senggigi Beach, where some of the island’s prettiest sunsets are to be witnessed. Further inland is Pusuk Park Pass, a reserve teeming with monkeys.
The town of Tanjung is mostly rural, with its market at the center of local life. From here, it’s a short boat ride to the peaceful Gili Islands, where there are no motor vehicles. Gili Air and Gili Meno are the smallest of the islands. Gili Trawangan is larger, and offers more in the way of accommodation, restaurants and activities.
